Silent Bell, Warrior Cry
An Evening of Zen Music

On September 7, 2002, Bamboo Bell presented Silent Bell, Warrior Cry, a shakuhachi concert featuring Bamboo Bell instructor Nelson Lee with guest artist Jim Scott-Behrends. Supported by a grant from the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County and sponsored by the Santa Cruz Zen Center, this concert featured an evening of classical Japanese honkyoku music, the original genre of the shakuhachi flute, at the Pacific Cultural Center in Santa Cruz, California.

The diverse audience of about 70 people of all ages were allowed to sit in chairs or meditate on the floor, read poetry, or paint with black ink on a scroll of rice paper, as Lee and Scott-Behrends performed their spiritual music. The soothing music, the peaceful atmosphere, and the community of souls meditating together combined to make the concert healing and deeply enjoyable.

Bamboo Bell wishes to thank the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, the Santa Cruz Zen Center, Gero Reed, and Jodi McClees for their support. Thank you also to our beautiful audience members, who made the concert a wonderful experience.
