Performances
Bamboo
Bell perfoms the powerful, meditative, and healing sounds of ancient
honkyoku (Zen) music on the shakuhachi (bamboo flute).
Shakuhachi
artist Nelson Lee is known for his ceremonial style concerts, where
the participants are able to meditate, read, or do calligraphy.
Lee's concerts are meditative
as well as musical. In an airy, carpeted room, or in a pleasantly
darkened zendo, Lee kneels on the floor, while his audience may
be sitting zazen style, or reading, or painting on a scroll as the
music floats through the room. "In my concerts, I am striving
for the audience to have a personal relationship with the sound.
Honkyoku music takes the listener on an inner journey, where one
can explore the depths of one's spirit. The sound becomes the focus
of the experience, and I become invisible," Lee said. Often
times, applause are often times not required. Lee says he knows
if the performance was success from the audience's smiles afterwards.
The music can also be
enjoyed simply for its calming and healing effects. For an example
of Lee's concerts/music, please view Silent
Bell, Warrior Cry, or enjoy the music downloads below.
